The Backyard Bucketlist
Right now is the best time in HISTORY to participate in the most exciting adventure activities with ZERO crowds and without breaking the bank.
Growing up in New Zealand, you would hear people refer to “The Big OE” …Meaning’ Overseas Experience.
I, like many other Kiwi’s (NZ’ers), grew up thinking about taking an around the world trip during their 20’s. We dream of escaping the Islands and seeing something “New” – A change of scenery if you will.
So that’s what I did. I ventured long and far through the Americas to Europe and beyond.
Seven months later I arrive home for a few weeks to my not so familiar New Zealand …And it was like I had acquired a new pair of eyes. Awestruck at the beauty of my home country.
Growing up in New Zealand was my “normal” …It got boring. I stopped seeing the amazing that was right in front of me.
When I arrived in New York City I couldn’t believe it. The people, high rises, the city lights. INSANE. So much happening, so many new experiences.
And it took seven months of these ‘new’ experiences to come home and realize what I had missed out on.
It was right in front of me my entire life. But I rarely left my hometown.
My Backyard.
I drove 3.5 hours from home to hike the Tongariro crossing. It was more scenic than any hike I had done.
I drove 40 minutes to jump in a ZORB and go flying down a hill inside a giant bouncy ball! – Insane. Then on the way home, I bathed in hot mud-pools that boiled from the earth.
I wondered to myself, why did you want to leave so badly?
We love adventure, and we love to experience something new. So we look at the other side of the world when we have the world right in front of us.
That’s why I created the Backyard Bucketlist.
I think you should complete this list before you venture beyond your home turf. Yes, you …Wherever in the world, you are.
As this Covid-19 madness sorts itself out, governments will first open up domestic travel, before international, allowing you to play tourist in your home town!
Chances are, thousands of people from all over the world come long and far to see your country/city or town… Why? What do they come so far to do and see?
The Backyard Bucketlist
Step 1.
Write a list of fun activities that you would do if you were a tourist in your home town. Start locally, then broaden out to your state, then country.
If you’re unsure about what to do, google “best things to do in [insert your hometown].”
Step 2.
Go social. Follow the accounts of the places on your list.
Why?
- As they post, it will keep you thinking about doing the activity! Making you more likely to do it.
- Chances are, as we exit this COVID crisis, many places will offer great deals you may never see again! Keep an eye out. They need business, and you need an adrenaline rush. It’s a win-win.
Step 3.
Schedule. You might read this. You might even go as far as writing a list. But will you follow through and do it? – Book and schedule the activities on your list!!! It’s key to making this happen.
Bonus:
Many people are in withdrawal mode. With economic uncertainty and job losses, that’s understandable. But that combined with locked borders also means NO CROWDS! – Especially as most people won’t do anything after reading this post lol.
To summarise: The simple act of you having as much fun as you possibly can over the next few months, is not only great for your mental health, and how you should be living life …But fantastic for the economy as well. Yes, even with the bargains you might find!
I hope this inspires you to go out and have a great time in your backyard, wherever in the world you are!
