Once I Was Seven Years Old
…this is a guest post from my Mum:
As a parent, there are things that you hope you can pass on to your kids – values, beliefs and life lessons from the family base camp, in whatever form ‘family’ takes for you.
Share some gems from the Buchan family archives – notes to a seven-year-old Nathan as he begins to venture further from home, often on his bike and always with a surfboard under his arm.
Nathan, now you are seven…
Be kind
Kindness counts. If you are kind to people then the world will be kind to you.
Share, take turns and remember what you learnt at kindy.
Don’t throw sand, it hurts when gets in your eyes.
Whatever you give out in life will return to you.
Karma is real.
Be grateful
Appreciation is the great multiplier – be grateful.
Other people pray every day for what you take for granted.
Give thanks every day for the people, places and things you are blessed with.
There is always something to be grateful for – always.
Despite the news, the world is a great place, it’s not out to get you.
People inherently mean well, and the Universe is there to support you.
Look for the good in everything.
Be courageous
Life is not always fair – get over it.
There are results for every choice you make,
if you don’t like the results you’re getting, change your choices.
There are no mistakes, just learning curves.
Give things a go – it’s part of figuring out who you are.
You’re a surfer – remember that there is always another wave.
If you fall off, get back on the board and wait for the next one.
It’s ok to ask for help
Boys are human and humans cry sometimes – that’s OK.
Courage is what helps you flatten the bully.
Be independent. There will not always be someone there to rescue you, to feed you, to wash your clothes or to open the can of baked beans.
Be generous
Money is energy, just like everything else –
spend some, save some, share some.
Money matters – it’s much easier to follow your dreams when you have the money to do it,
just don’t make it more important than everything else
Money needs movement, let it flow, don’t hoard it –
remember mould grows on things left at the back of the fridge.
Be respectful
Respect everyone and everything – including the planet.
Make everyone’s day better simply by being in it.
Manners matter, use them – every day.
By saying please, I respect you.
By saying thank you, I appreciate you.
Reflect on the wisdom of the ages –
Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything
that no longer serves you, grows you or makes you happy.
Be yourself
Wear odd socks – conform to the way you need to make life work but don’t get lost in suburbia or sucked into a normal, average or mediocre existence.
Don’t just think outside the box – live outside it.
Always be a kid in some form or another
Take time to play, to create, to dream and to imagine.
Just because people hold positions of authority, have university degrees and lists of letters after their name doesn’t necessarily mean they know more than you or know what is right for you.
All it means is that they have more knowledge in a specific area and are further down the life timeline than you.
Live from your heart and never lose sight of your dreams.
Your mind is your most powerful resource, use it wisely.
Never forget where you came from. Home will always be home and remember –
Wherever you are, wherever you go, we are there with you.
Guest Blogger – Mary Buchan, aka my MUM
My Mother gave me life and never asked for anything in return. She has played a massive role in my life and has taught me many valuable lessons that have shaped me into who I am today. She is my biggest inspiration on this planet… And she has a lot of wisdom the world needs to hear.
I asked if Mum would be a guest on my blog once a week (or so) and share a dose of her inspiration, motivation, or whatever she’s feeling at the time.
She’s a busy woman, often working closely with children in early childhood and helping parents grow their relationships with their young ones. She is also a certified life coach and works with individuals 1 on 1 empowering others to live more fulfilling and purposeful life.
To learn about her services, Skype coaching programs, etc… check her website: https://www.echolife.co.nz for wisdom & motivation her FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/echolifecoaching/
