Secure Your Oxygen Mask First
I have donated thousands of dollars to charities, spoken on stages in front of thousands of people, and worked with thousands of individuals to improve their online presence or business in some way, shape, or form.
Although I have barely scratched the surface of where I would like to go, and I would not consider myself a guru of any kind. I do feel like I have been able to help more people in a way I never thought possible before.
But none of this would have happened if I wasn’t selfish at first.
It’s easy to feel guilty about the things we do or food we eat because we know there are millions of people out there that would do anything for a nice home cooked meal or a roof over their head. But I heard a saying that can help the way we look at this situation without it affecting our success and life ambitions.
Secure your own oxygen mask before helping others.
Richard Branson donated half of his fortune (2 billion dollars) to charity… As a result, he has saved and improved thousands of lives around the world. This would not have been possible without Richard being massively successful.
Too often we try to save the world without looking after ourselves first. Many people talk about giving back or wanting to make a difference in the world. All while they are struggling to pay their own bills.
I never really thought about making a difference in other peoples lives.
…The truth is, I was always selfish.
I starting working online so I could do what I want, I travelled the world because it was my dream, I quit my job suddenly because I didn’t like it. For a long time, I just thought about myself and myself only.
I didn’t really consider anyone else.
I like to think of myself as a giving person, but I hated the current situation I was in so dedicated myself 100% to get what I wanted out of life. Not what I felt others wanted from me. If I had worried about what my old boss would think if I quit …or felt guilty because I travel non-stop and do what I want each day, while millions of people worked long hours hating what they do, then I would never be where I am today.
I am all for giving back, helping others out, and making a difference in the world etc…
But as a flight attendant would tell you “secure your own oxygen mask before helping others”. The reality is that you are no use to anyone dead. It’s important you help yourself first.
I feel this is the same in many areas of life.
Secure your oxygen mask first, THEN help others.
