World’s Largest Ice Cave – Austria (what to wear)
My partner (Intrepid Introvert) & I visited the world’s largest ice cave, or Eisriesenwelt, during our road trip through Austria. It’s located near Salzburg, and was one of the craziest experiences of our Austria travels!
It was an odd feeling, going to an ice cave and freezing your tail off in the middle of summer when it’s 30’C (86’F) outside… We looked a little nuts, walking in winter gear in the middle of summer.
Also made hiking up the mountain to get there a (sweaty) adventure! Totally worth it for the view though.
You purchase tickets at the bottom of the hill to access the cave. This includes a gondola ride half way up the mountain as it gets too steep to walk. The walk itself takes about 30 minutes from the bottom of the hill to the top. If you go in summer it can be HOT.
But make no mistake, once you make it into the Eisriesenwelt ice cave you will be freezing. So it’s good to be prepared for that!
Once you arrive at the top you will likely see a crowd of fellow tourists waiting to enter the cave. You go inside in groups of about 10 or 20, the way they organize it is superb! Very little waiting time.
We took the tour through the first kilometer of the 42, and it’s totally covered in ice and beautiful. The entire walk takes about an hour which is more than enough time to cool right down. Winter gear, definitely needed!
Hannah gives it a 10/10 especially considering the walk up and view 👌 … I agree.
Please, share this with your travel buddy!
