Food Tours Vienna (a.k.a. DELICIOUS)
Hannah (Intrepid Introvert) and I love food!
…And knew that Austria was a place we had to do right. So we linked up with Food Tours Vienna, and they did not disappoint.
Ever heard someone say “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse” Vegetarians, do NOT watch this video.
When you’re not sure the details of a place, and you’re hungry, our recommendation is definitely to link up with a tour company and have the locals show you how its done (and what to eat!). In my opinion, it’s the fastest and best way to learn about a new place.
In a place like Vienna, a food tour is a must.
Lukas, our tour guide (and owner of Food Tours Vienna) definitely did not disappoint. He was wearing traditional Austrian clothing with the pants you see at Oktoberfest and even had food samples from the butcher ready the second we arrived.
Immediately Served:
- One of the best hams we’ll ever eat (expertly claimed by Lukas) that had been cured for a week then smoked for 12 hours
- A sausage I can’t pronounce or spell
- Beef tongue
- A pickle
Yeah, beef tongue! …It wasn’t half bad actually, even for us the not most adventurous eaters. Not going to lie though, It is hard to get the image out of your brain haha.
First Stop: A bakery that has been in Vienna since 1536
Then onto local vineyard Austrian wine for a mid-morning break. What goes with wine? Chocolate! …I know you were thinking, (cheese) we’ll get to that soon. But, we got some amazing chocolates.
Next, a nice walk through the streets then brings us to the most popular store in Vienna, a 10 sq meter sausage hut (to be fair, it’s right behind the opera house).
As we’re walking along …because we weren’t already full of bread, meat, wine, chocolate, and sausage lol. We thought a quick stop for a burger would be a good idea. Until we realised it was made of horse meat!?
Oh well, do as the locals do and eat how the locals eat, at least once!
(especially since the horses aren’t farmed for the burgers).
Follow all of this up by, licking some vinegar off your hand that’s been locally produced. First time I even liked vinegar, by the way. New appreciation for vinegar.
Then, being shown a 2000 euro leg of ham.
Cheese tasting at the local food market, Naschmarkt, at one of the best stores (that I can’t pronounce). Included: Goat cheese, sheep cheese, and cow cheese. Don’t forget, the perfect bread!Next, we ducked into Café Sperl because you can’t leave Vienna without getting some apple strudel and coffee. Plus, the atmosphere inside is amazing.
And lastly, we ducked into a Café because you can’t leave Vienna without getting some apple strudel and coffee!
If you’re ever in Vienna and in the mood to do food as the Austrian’s do – sausage, chocolate, wine, cheese, bread, pastries and even a coffee to top it all off (what better day is there?) – DEFINITELY give Food Tours Vienna a shout to show you how to do it!
