Why Many Millennials Will Soon Be Homeless
For the past 2.5 years, I have decided to make other people’s homes my own. And while I am officially homeless, I am never without a roof over my head.
As a homeless Millennial, I have stayed in many, hotels, hostels, friends basements, etc.. But Airbnb has really been the base of what I could call ‘home’ for the past few years, and for good reason!
My name’s Nate. Starting Jan 2014 I moved my life into a backpack to travel the world,
and although I loved staying in party hostels in Ecuador, or 5-star hotels for half the price of the U.S because, well… Asia is awesome!
I began feeling like I wanted to slow down the pace of my travels a little, and get deeper into each place to feel as if I lived there.
So I started using Airbnb, and it has been the base of my accommodation ever since.
I absolutely love it, anyone could (and soon more will) adopt this way of living, even if you don’t travel.. Whether it’s an Airbnb, VRBO, or a fully furnished apartment.
I feel that having ‘no home’ is a great way to live!
Here’s why:
1. You don’t have to own any “stuff”
By “stuff” I mean things like coffee makers, utensils, microwaves, tv’s, furniture, beds, a router for your internet, a new pair of bed sheets when the ones you have get too old. The list goes on.
We spend thousands of dollars each year accumulating “stuff” to make a house look like and feel like it’s our own.
Well, you don’t have to anymore. When you rent an Airbnb everything is there, ready for you to use.
If you’re lucky, you might even find a fresh bag of coffee waiting for your arrival..
#2. No Bills
You know the bills you have to pay each and every month. Power, Electricity, Water, Trash, Cable TV, Wifi etc.
Homeless millennials don’t have to think about any of that stuff anymore. All of that is included in the price.
Right now I am in this beautiful place in Mexico for around $1500USD per month.
… Included in that price is everything listed above. Plus I get my place cleaned every few days, and given fresh sheets and towels. There’s a gardener that keeps the grounds looking great, and cleans the pool every morning!
Take a look, I’m on the top floor on right:
All you have to pay is your nightly, weekly, or monthly cost. Which leads me to..
#3 It’s not expensive.
Well, ok. It can be.
But if you consider the amount you spend on bills, maintenance, etc.. And you rent per month you will usually find a place at a very reasonable price, relative to the area.
Pro Tip #1: If you book an Airbnb for a month vs a night, the price drops significantly.
… and if you travel. Well, you can get some amazing places very cheap. (aim for Asia or Central and South America)
Pro Tip #2: If you plan to stay for a few nights, you can private message the host and ask them if they will give you a discount. They can adjust the price and create an offer for you inside Airbnb‘s platform.
#4 You’re always at home.
This is a different way of living, but it’s only going to get more and more popular.
When you enter a house, even for the first time, you instantly feel at home.
Why?
Because everything is done for you. All you have to do is unzip your backpack, punch in the wifi code, and you are home!
Obviously, it’s cool to see what new belongings you have as far as books on the shelf, gadgets in the kitchen, artwork on the walls, how big your shower is etc.
But you don’t have to do anything!
#5 You will never get bored,
Arriving in a new location every few months definitely keep things fresh. Every place has a lot to explore, and fitting everything in the space of a month will definitely keep you busy!
or lonely…
You meet awesome people from around the world.
Traveling solo? Go for a private room vs an entire home.
Sometimes you will find that people have separate areas from the house where you can stay or a room with an ensuite. We had a 2-day layover in LA so we decided to hit Venice beach and thought we would get a room vs an entire place. The host was so cool! Very friendly and helped us with what to do, and where to go in the short 2 days we had in the area.
Here’s a vid.. skip like a minute in, you will see the place.
#6 Location Freedom.
Moving house is easy.
If winter’s coming and you need a change… Or you have been living in the tropics for a little too long and your craving some snow.
Simple, just move.
It’s not a big deal moving your entire life. If you just have your belongings in a backpack or two, then you can pick up and leave at the drop of a hat.
See this way of life is very different to many people. But it’s becoming more and more common every day.
If you get used to the idea, you’re always at home.
You just have to be able to adapt to the change…
